Making a simple dried flower shadow box is an easy and beautifully project that can add texture and depth to a wall in your home.

A year after our wedding, my husband gifted me a replica of my wedding bouquet. I pressed them, so that I could frame them like I had envisioned. (You can learn more about that project and how to press your wedding bouquet here.)

Because my bouquet was pretty big, and I only had used about 1 of each flower in my frame, I had some extra dried flowers left over. Some people might just toss these, but because these had more meaning behind them, I wanted to save them… just incase.

They have been sitting in our office, as I have not known what to do with them until I finally had some inspiration. I saw a photo of flowers simply placed in a row in a frame. It was simple, yet elegant.

WHAT FLOWERS SHOULD BE USED IN THE SHADOW BOX

You really can put any flowers in the box or frame, as long as they are dried. They could be flowers from a special occasion (wedding, anniversary, celebration of life, birthday), or flowers you just bought for this very project.

If you use a shadow box over a frame, the flowers don’t even have to be flat.

The flowers I used were flattened because I originally was using them for another project, but for this one, they could have just been dried.

HOW TO DRY FLOWERS FOR A FLOWER SHADOW BOX

The easiest way to dry out your flowers is to put them in sunlight and remove them from water. If you don’t want them flat at all, I would still keep them in a vase, and not laid down. However, the back of your frame is flat and no one will see that side, so lying them down would be okay.

If you plan to press your flowers, even a little bit, you will want to get some old books, or heavy objects and paper. The paper is essential because it will soak up the moisture inside the greenery and flowers, so no mold grows.

Place the florals inside the book or on a flat surface just as how you would want them in the frame.

Close the books or lay another paper and a large object on top, and check on the florals periodically.

ITEMS NEEDED TO MAKE A SIMPLE DRIED FLOWER SHADOW BOX

HOW TO MAKE A SIMPLE DRIED FLOWER SHADOW BOX

Once your flowers and greenery are dried, open your frame or box.

Depending on the back of your box or frame, you may want to make the back part of your frame white. My deep frame came with a white mat, so an 8×10 photo could fit inside. I went ahead and grabbed an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper and taped it to the back of the mat. Since the mat was more raised than the paper, I used it as a boarder for my florals. (If you don’t have a mat, you could always use poster board for the back or even spray paint the backing.)

When you have your background set, start arranging your flowers as desired. Put the florals you want in the back of your arrangement on first, and continue to layer until you get the layout you want.

Then, use your glue gun to secure your florals to the mat or white paper. This is to make sure your flowers don’t move around, if any are loose.

Once the glue is dried, pull off excess glue strings.

Close up your frame or box and you are ready to hang your dried flower shadow box.

OTHER IDEAS FOR DRIED FLOWERS

Dried flowers can be such pretty decor. Having the right style and color of flowers is key to making them look elegant in your space. Make sure you are using florals that compliment your space.

A lot of greenery looks awesome dried – eucalyptus, olive leaves, boxwood, palms, and more.

You can add these to a vase (no need for water), lay on a table like a bouquet with a ribbon, or even create a wreath.

WHERE TO HANG YOUR DRIED FLOWER SHADOW BOX

Again, making sure your flowers and room are cohesive will help them add an elegant touch. Put your flowers in a room they will compliment.

You can hang them on a wall, lean them on a shelf, add them on top of a console table, or hang them on a hook with a ribbon or wire.
